Mid-year check in

There are two kinds of people we start hearing from around this time of year:

Those who post “only 160 days til christmas!!!” on their Facebook feed the morning of July 18th, and those who say things like “The year has really flown by already” or “June lasted for all of 2 minutes!”

If you tend to spend more energy thinking about time lost or you're focused on future plans, we all have one thing in common - this time of year makes us extremely aware that we’re at the halfway mark. And on some level, this knowledge can create a subtle anxiety underneath the surface for just about everyone.

Whether we’re stressed about how quickly time has passed or we’re anxiously awaiting what’s ahead, the mid-year panic is real.

If you do communication for your business, you probably started your year out with grand plans for each quarter, projected growth, and more online engagement. Even if you’re having a great year in business, things still probably don’t look quite how you thought they would six months ago.

You said your email campaign would be bringing in more sales than ever and that your blog posts would be consistent and cohesive…but then other aspects of your business became more demanding, and maybe you forgot about your blog altogether or decided it wasn’t worth the trouble.

There are so many ways we can get sidetracked and discouraged throughout the course of the year - and it’s actually okay to not meet every one of your goals!

But it’s good to strike a balance between not putting too much pressure on yourself and still being diligent in your work.

So how do we deal with frustration over our best made plans without throwing up our hands and resolving to “just get through the rest of the year?”

The answer actually doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here are three practical steps you can take to get back to some of your January of 2022 goals:

  1. Evaluate your lead generator

Is your lead gen getting you the leads you want? Consider polling some close friends or colleagues for their honest, personal opinion. If their response is lackluster, redo that lead gen and see what changes.

  2. Test your emails

One of the biggest culprits in communication with customers can be proximity to your own message. Maybe that email campaign you wrote 5 months ago seemed like it was going to be a huge success, but it’s taking you nowhere fast. Sign up for your own email campaign with another email address, and see how the emails translate when you receive them in that separate inbox. It just might provide the “outside perspective” you’ve been needing. Adjust accordingly.

  3. Hire a proofreader

When you see your company’s website every day, it’s easy to miss typos, broken forms, or wonky formatting. It may seem excessive, but we promise it's not – consider hiring a proofreader to triple check that your website is in tip-top shape!

Revamping your messaging and communication strategy doesn’t always require a huge overhaul. It can often be as simple as making some small changes once you look at your materials with a different perspective!
